It’s called “Mapping the Future of Cardiology,” and the report comes from the journal Circulation. It was produced by the American College of Cardiology and features the work of more than 100 researchers who participated in a global survey about how machine learning is being used in the field of cardiology.

The findings underscore how much progress has been made in applying machine learning to medicine. In the report, the researchers explained how a form of machine learning called deep learning is being used to detect heart disease.
“Deep learning helps clinicians find problems that are not evident from a patient’s symptoms and physical exam, and identify high-risk patients who may need more aggressive treatment,” said lead author Dr. Robert Moir, an attending cardiologist at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. “For example, deep learning can help detect heart disease that is masked by normal physical examination, and it can assist in the prediction of future events such as heart attacks.”

Other examples highlighted in the report include how machine learning can help doctors more effectively use cardiac imaging and allow the screening of risk factors like high blood pressure. The researchers are now developing ways to use machine learning in other ways, such as creating better ways to detect arrhythmias and heart failure.
Several of the study’s co-authors said the increasing use of machine learning in cardiology may become even more widespread.
“Deep learning holds promise to improve cardiovascular care and deliver better patient outcomes,” said co-author Dr. John Wang, a cardiologist and the chair of the Council of Cardiology Residency Directors. “Over the next several years, we expect a surge of clinical research focused on deep learning applied to diagnosis, risk assessment and prognostication.”
